Online At-Home Lesson 2
Welcome to the second online at-home lesson.
Please note that this page represents a variety of the lessons that I would teach the students over the course of a week or more .
The Education Minister Stephen Lecce recommends a minimum of five hours of work per student/week (focus on literacy, math, science and social studies for Grade 4 students but you are welcome to complete more than this if you wish.
I am always open for suggestions and feedback... in class we call it "stars" and "wishes". If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me.

And, I finally would offer a wonderful window message from our friend Parker...
Miss Davies mentioned that research suggests that we listen to 45 minutes of our favourite music each day... and you may have noticed already that Miss Davies loves music of all genres and has very eclectic tastes...
On Saturday night while I was building this lesson out of nowhere I started to sing (and dance in my desk chair - funny sight I know ) a song I know about Saturday night... please keep in mind that Miss Davies is a product of the late 60's ... while you are listening I have a few things for you to consider:

- notice the running shoe brand - does it look familiar?
- notice the length of their pants - yes it was a fashion trend then and now we call them flood pants
- notice the hair styles
- can you guess what nationality these men are from?
- notice who is the lead singer... do you know of any other bands where the lead singer is the drummer?
- can you imagine Miss Davies is one of these cool outfits... - yes I really do think they are cool ... keep this in mind for a later section in this lesson ...
- how many other songs do you think have been written about days of the week?
Hi, its me Waldo back again for another learning adventure ... This time I have brought a friend that I recently brought home as a foster dog from the SPCA ...
We are both very excited about spring and are looking forward to celebrating Easter this coming weekend together ... We have a lot planned and are hoping you will come and join us on another online learning adventure ... wanna guess the theme before we start? (if this was class we would get some ideas for themes and then create a tally chart ...) |
Where's Waldo Check-in and add-on from Week 1
Check out these masterpieces by our very own Peyton and Amy ... great work artists!!!
Using what we learned last week (see below), you will continue to expand on your understanding of fractions - remember the numerator, the number on the top represents the total number of Waldos you have found and the denominator, the number on the bottom) represents the total number of pics that are hidden and is now 20 ...
If Miss Davies finds 7 Waldos in her search the fraction would be 7/20
now I will divide that number 7/20 and I will get 0.35
then, in order to find the percentage I take the 0.35 and multiply it by 100 and you will get 35%
Therefore, Miss Davies only found 7/20 or 35% of all the hidden Waldos
To check do the opposite and multiply 0.35 X 20 = 7
In this lesson you learned the following concepts: fraction, numerator, denominator, and how to create a fraction, by dividing , and multiply . Please be sure to look at the math sections if you are stuck ...

As you know, I am a foster dog ... I am really happy to be home with Waldo but there is one really big problem... he keeps calling me "Dog"...
I don't mean to sound ungrateful or rude but I would rather that he call me something other than "Dog"... I am wondering if you might be able to help him come up with a name ... when you do please send your suggestions to Miss Davies so she can forward them to Waldo... Please, please do not call me Bunny ... I am a male dog!!! Did you know that Bunny is short for Bernice - how about that! Make sense, I didn't think so! Also, can someone, anyone, ask Waldo or Miss Davies to remove these bunny ears... they are hurting my head!!! As you know Miss Davies LOVES to turn everything into a math lesson - even though she "says" math is not something she enjoyed before becoming a teacher! Miss Davies thought you could send the names to her and she will let you decide as a class, based on the "majority rules" principle... So, can guess how she might be going to that when we are not all is a classroom together? What strand is she going to teach? What tool do you think she will use to figure out the majority? If you guessed a tally chart then you are right!! Until she gets the result she thought you might like to try gathering names at home and create your own tally chart... |
Weekly Language Calendar
In grade 4, we move from learning to read which was our focus in grades 1 to 3, to comprehending or understanding what we are reading or have read...
We all have different levels of interest in reading and our ability to read ... therefore some of us are strong readers while others of us are still working on it ...
The following links are for the grade 4 weekly language lessons and depending on your comfort level in language you are welcome to complete whichever weekly language calendar (select the grade you would prefer using the above link) best suits your ability and comfort level ...
** Note: the rule of thumb for finding "just right books" is called the 5 Finger Rule
THE FIVE FINGER RULE
The five finger rule is a quick and easy way for you to check if a book is suitable to read on your own. Before you start, turn to a random page in the book and read it. For every word that you don’t know, you should hold up a finger.
Use the following guidelines according to how many fingers you hold up:
0 or 1 – Most probably too easy for you.
2 – A good choice that will give you a reasonable challenge and allow you to learn new words.
3 – You might need some help, but still a good choice if you’re up for a challenge.
4 – May be too difficult for you to read on their own. If you have a friend or parent/guardian to help you, have them read along with you.
5 – Most probably a bit too advanced, try a different book.

The Good Egg: an integrated Unit
Dog and I are so excited about this upcoming weekend... and you know what that means ... "chocolate, bunny rabbits, and chicks oh my" ... and egg decorating and egg hunts, and, and , and ...
"No, hold on a minute you two... I think it is important that before we get all excited and crazy about Easter that maybe, just maybe we take a breath and maybe try to incorporate some science, social studies, math - of course, and maybe even a little art and media ... how about that! I think it is a great time to introduce our next topic ... chicken eggs! "Dog, don't tell Miss Davies but I don't think this is going to be a very interesting or exciting lesson. Don't the rest of your tell her either. I don't want to have a time out on Easter weekend and Miss Davies use that time to eat all of my chocolate"... |
All About Eggs: an integrated lesson
And, for those of you who celebrate Easter ...
This week we are going to learn about chemical reactions and who better to teach us about it than Miss Davies' third best male idol, Bill Nye...

The following are some fun activities for you to try at home with an adult...
After you have completed these activities, write 2 or 3 sentences describing :
- which one was the most challenging? Explain your answer.
- which one did you most enjoy? Explain your answer.
- which one surprised you. Explain your answer.

Using this real image of a dog shown below, draw what you the lower half of the image might look like? You may wish to use a grid to help you to do this...
Using whatever recycled materials you have at home, create new hat for Dog. Using metric length, the hat cannot be greater than 10 centimeters high or 10 centimeters wide.
